The Liger Leadership Academy in partnership with Cambodia’s leading mobile telecommunications operator Smart Axiata, concluded Cambodia’s first women’s Frisbee League competition – a pilot program that aims to encourage female participation in sports.

The three-month pilot aimed to introduce more gender equity into sport, which is generally dominated by males. The Frisbee League was participated by female students from four rural schools and communities in Kampong Speu with all coaching, training and league organization led by Liger students.

Before the league started, Liger conducted training from January 2019 with over 60 students to create awareness and form teams for the competition. The team from Liger also carried out surveys with the local communities to conduct impact assessments and developed a training module which could be repurposed by other interested stakeholders who wish to scale this sport in future.

Dominic Sharpe, Director of Liger Leadership Academy, said “Women and girls of all ages deserve the opportunity to participate in sports. At Liger, we provide an educational model that touches all aspects of life and as a result encompasses academic, sports and personal achievements. Students at Liger Leadership Academy are given equal opportunity to pursue their dreams and we believe that students across Cambodia should have that chance too.”

Since its establishment in 2012, Liger Leadership Academy has provided more than 100 full scholarships to economically disadvantaged students, covering tuition, accommodation, clothing, medical care and insurance, school supplies as well as transportation. Through this pilot, important life skills such as integrity, leadership, confidence and nutrition were also imparted to the participants during the workshops and training programs.

“Smart is very encouraged by not only the outcome of the pilot but how it was fully organized by a young diverse group of well-rounded students from Liger. The league has certainly promoted women empowerment while at the same time encouraged girls to excel in sports, believe in themselves and lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Jonathan Yap, Head of Regulatory & Corporate Affairs of Smart Axiata.

Community Sports is a key pillar of Smart’s CSR portfolio that aims to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as sporting values such as cooperation, respect, commitment and teamwork.
