Phnom Penh, 16th May 2018: Smart Axiata has been recognized by the General Department of Taxation (GDT) with a Gold Award for Tax Compliance. By receiving this award, Smart becomes the first telecommunications company ever in the Kingdom to be recognized for meeting its tax obligations.

During the certificate handover on 10th May, H.E. Kong Vibol, Director General of the GDT, praised Smart’s adherence to tax guidelines and requirements for the telecoms sector.

“Smart has worked very hard to follow the tax compliance guidelines issued by the Royal Government of Cambodia. This is a testament to their exemplary practices in the country. We hope that this award will act as motivation for all taxpayers in Cambodia to support the Kingdom’s growth and development through accurate and timely tax filing,” H.E. Kong Vibol said.

The Gold Award is given to companies that achieve between 16 and 20 points from a set of 12 criteria issued by the GDT focused on compliance, meeting of payment deadlines and submission of accurate documentation when requested.

Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt said the award was a proud moment for the company.

“Smart has always undertaken its national responsibilities very seriously and we at Smart are committed to the highest professional standards in everything we do. This stretches from providing industry-leading services, to having an active CSR agenda as well as to paying mandated taxes and contributing to the state exchequer. Receiving such recognition for our efforts in meeting tax obligations is certainly a proud moment for us.”

Smart, which paid USD 76.4 million in tax, levies and regulatory fees in 2017, continues to be one of the country’s largest taxpayers. Its tax contribution alone represents 3% of the total national income last year.

As per media reports , the GDT collected USD 1.93 billion in 2017, an increase of 30% over the previous year, and announced the collection of USD 761 million in the first quarter of 2018.
