Cambodia’s leading mobile operator, Smart Axiata, is reaffirming the company’s commitment to sustainability and preserving the environment by supporting the Cambodia Climate Change Summit 2022 (CCCS22).

The three-day Cambodia Climate Change Summit 2022 (CCCS22) by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) and in partnership with the Mekong Future Institute, brought together experts, practitioners, civil societies, and businesses to showcase Cambodia’s efforts toward sustainability and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Smart Axiata was one of the event’s main sponsors.

The summit’s mission was to advance the national discourse on climate-related issues in the Kingdom of Cambodia and provide an opportunity for increased coordination among climate change professionals.

His Excellency SAY Samal, Minister of Environment of Cambodia, said: “We must acknowledge the undeniable fact that the nation-wide peace and stability, which evolved from the conscience of Cambodian unity and integration under the framework of Win-Win policy, is a catalyst for economic growth, the country’s development, and the improvement of living standards. With development comes challenges to the environment and sustainability. On behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, I am delighted to have the support of companies such as Smart Axiata to assist us in promoting sustainability and acting responsibly in their operational endeavors for the good of the environment.”

Acting CEO of Smart Axiata Feiruz Ikhwan said: “At Smart Axiata, sustainability is our key priority. It is at the heart of our business model and by working together with partners across different sectors, we will deliver on our mission to connect people and make lives better while also creating a sustainable future.”

“This is the first opportunity since COVID to bring together such a diverse group of climate change professionals. CCCS22 is also the largest event of its kind in Cambodia.” – Allen Dodgson Tan, Director General, Mekong Future Initiative.

This year’s event highlighted the progress the Kingdom of Cambodia has made toward climate-related issues. There were also contributions from a diverse range of stakeholders including the private and public sectors.

Companies and organisations that participated in CCCS22 included USAID, Forte Insurance, Smart Axiata, Heineken, Oxfam Cambodia, and others.

The Summit includes sessions on Renewable Energy, Green Finance/Climate Finance, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Environmental Technological Innovations across a wide range of industries such as Agriculture, Transport, Tourism, and Commerce.

Earlier in the year Smart Axiata was one of the main sponsors of Earth Hour in Cambodia coming together with Royal Government Ministries, local community, youth, public and private entities, non-governmental organizations, media, and households across Cambodia to demonstrate their actions towards a healthier and better future for all. In addition, Smart Axiata is also actively addressing urgent climate issues by monitoring and managing the company’s carbon footprint as part of the company’s efforts to promote sustainability.

Smart Axiata is also active at the grassroots level by embarking on environmental education trips alongside Cambodian Rural Students Trust (CRST) to raise awareness of the importance of refusing, reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic trash. The latest program took place earlier in 2022 as part of the Project R initiative, which aims to reduce single-use plastic in and around Siem Reap, through education, action, and inspiration.
