Siem Reap, 09th August 2015 – National Olympic Committee of Cambodia reported 2,700 runners representing 49 countries sweating for kilometers around the world famous temple complex in the second edition of the Angkor Empire Marathon.

In the early morning, the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) president H.E Thong Kun set the runners on their way. He said “Cambodia is honored to host such an eclectic and international event, highlighting how the role Angkor Wat has been playing in boosting tourism to Cambodia.”

1,250 Cambodians were seen with another more than 1,450 foreigners from 48 countries taking part in the races over 4 distances ranging from 5km to 10km, 21km and the full marathon distance of 42km. The total number of runners has made Angkor Empire Marathon become one of the largest sporting events of the year in Cambodia.

The atmosphere of Angkor Empire Marathon was unique and magnificent for the runners since the race route went directly through the Angkor Temple complex; therefore, the participants were able to witness the undeniably breathtaking scenery while running.

Cambodia’s Ma Viro finished 3rd over the full marathon, spending 2 hours, 54 minutes and 29 seconds, right behind a pair of Japanese runners, Koki Kawauchi and Neko Hiroshi respectively.

“Smart Axiata is proud being the co-sponsor of this signature event since the beginning of its existence” said Thomas Hundt, CEO. “Running events are fully aligned to our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda under which Smart actively promotes Education, Green Environment and Healthy Sport Lifestyle. Since 2011, we have worked with NOCC and we are glad that NOCC has managed to grow the interest in Marathon, hitting 2,700 runners participating this event.”
